The Sweden Higher Education Residence Permit Process

All non-EU/EEA students studying for more than three months require a Residence Permit for Higher Education (Uppehållstillstånd för högre utbildning) issued by the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket).

1. The Golden Rule: Pay First, Apply Second

Before Migrationsverket will begin processing your application, your Swedish university must register that you have paid your first semester tuition fee instalment. Once paid, the university notifies Migrationsverket electronically, allowing your online permit case to proceed.

2. Migrationsverket Financial Maintenance Requirement (2025/2026)

For applications submitted in 2025/2026, the statutory maintenance requirement is exactly 10,314 SEK per month. For an academic year (calculated on 10 months of study), you must prove access to at least 103,140 SEK (approx. $10,000 USD) in a personal bank account registered exclusively in your own name.

3. Unique Advantage: No Hourly Work Limits During Studies!

Unlike the UK (20 hrs), Canada (24 hrs), or Australia (24 hrs equivalence), Sweden places no statutory limit on the number of hours international students may work during the validity of their higher education permit. However, your primary reason for stay must remain full-time study; to renew your permit, you must achieve at least 15 ECTS credits in your first year and 22.5 ECTS credits in subsequent semesters.

4. Swedish Institute Scholarships for Global Professionals (SISGP)

The Swedish Government funds the prestigious SISGP scholarship, covering 100% of tuition fees, a generous monthly stipend of 12,000 SEK/month, an insurance policy, and a 15,000 SEK travel grant. It targets Master's applicants with at least 3,000 hours of documented work and leadership experience.

5. Post-Study Work: 12-Month Job Search Permit

After graduating from a degree program of at least two semesters, you can apply for a 12-month residence permit to seek employment or explore starting a business. Finding a qualifying job paying at least 80% of the Swedish median wage (currently ~28,480 SEK/month) unlocks a full Swedish Work Permit, and 4 years of work qualifies you for Permanent Residence (PUT).
